Night Blindness

Lack of vitamin A, first causes night blindness or inability to see in dim light. The mother herself can detect this condition when her child cannot see in late evenings or find her in a darkened room. Night blindness is due to impairment in dark adaptation. Unless vitamin A intake is increased, the condition may get worse, especially when children also suffer from diarrhea and other infections.

Night blindness, officially known as nyctalopia, is inability to adapt to dark lighting conditions. When a person can't see well enough to discern contrasting images under low lighting conditions, blindness can result.

The retina is well supplied with an important chemical substance called rhodopsin, or “visual purple”. Light falling on the retina brings about certain chemical changes in the rhodopsin and other substances present in the rods and cones. These changes occur very rapidly, but large quantities of vitamin A are needed to bring this about. If there is any marked deficiency of vitamin A, night blindness may occur. This can usually be corrected by administering suitable amounts of vitamin A in the diet.

Vitamin A deficiency also contributes to development of night blindness because of the nutrient's importance in maintaining the health of the eye's retina. One study reported in Journal of Nutrition (October 2004) effectively used tests detecting night blindness in pregnant women to determine whether mothers-to-be lacked vitamin A considered crucial for healthy development of their babies.

Retinitis Pigmentosa is characterized by night blindness and black dotting of the fundus. The Optic Nerve becomes pale white, called Optic atrophy.

Types of Night Blindness
  1. Congenital Stationary Night Blindness: This type of night blindness, present at birth, can have varying causes often related to inherited disorders.
  2. Progressive Night Blindness: As implied by the name, progressive night blindness continues to worsen. Causes can include factors such as vitamin A deficiency, disease, and toxic effects of drugs including quinine used to treat malaria and other conditions.
  3. Night Blindness as Complication of Obesity Surgery: Individuals who undergo obesity surgery altering the way the body absorbs food can develop night blindness, primarily because nutrients such as vitamin A may be lacking if patients fail to use nutritional supplements following surgery.
What are the causes of night blindness?

Night blindness is due to a disorder of the cells in the retina that are responsible for vision in dim light. It has many causes,

  • Lack of vitamin A, which can cause a disorder of the retina and make the eyes very dry
  • Cataracts, which are cloudy areas in the lens of the eye
  • Some forms of retinal degeneration, like retinitis pigmentosa
  • Trouble adjusting from low levels of light to high levels of light
  • Certain medications
  • Birth defects

Some risk factors for night blindness include:

  • Age: older people are more likely to have cataracts
  • Diet: people who don’t eat enough sources of vitamin A, such as green leafy vegetables, eggs, and whole milk products (vitamin A deficiency is very rare in the US, but still occurs in certain less developed countries)
Disorders that affect the ability of the body to absorb vitamin A:
    • Liver disorders
    • Surgery on the pancreas or liver
    • Intestinal conditions
What are the signs and symptoms of night blindness?

Symptoms are difficulty or inability to see in low light or darkness. While driving, this may also occur a few seconds after the bright headlights of an oncoming car have passed.

Associated symptoms include:

  • Dry eyes
  • Blurred vision
Treatment

Treatment for night blindness will depend upon its cause . Treatments generally include:

  • Taking vitamin A supplements
  • Removal of the cataracts.
  • Eating a diet with adequate amounts of Vitamin A may help prevent night blindness.

My Night Blindness Issue
I am currently suffering from Nyctalopia, and the symptoms are increasing. Whilst driving at night is something I do my best to avoid, sometimes you do not have an alternative and the stress of this journey is horrendous, as each passing vehicle blinds me, I cannot pick out shapes around me. I do have special lenses in my glasses, that are tinted green, however this does not seem, to deflect all of the glare from oncoming headlights. Is there an operation, I can have to correct this?

Hi, i suffer from nightblindness and a lazy eye, so no depth preseption. It sucks. i was told there is nothing i could do about it. As a result i had to release from the army. Just last week i heard about vision therapy to treat the lazy eye, it seems promising so we'll see how it goes. as for the nightblindness i havn't yet came accross anything for it. I am shocked on how little information there is about the condition. Medicine has come along way, but i guess there is quit a way to go still... i wish you all the best..

Sanjay and Babara,

I have suffered from night blindness since birth and I am now 25 years old. I can't drive at night... I can barely see to walk at night! You both mentioned passing along this condition to children. It is most DEFINITELY something passed along. My mother and grandmother both suffer from the same problem I do!!

I have not read anywhere how to prevent spreading it, but my mother was told (in the early 80's in Europe) to take plenty of Vitamin A supplements while she was pregnant. Obviously I still inherited the condition, but I did not seem to suffer much until I was an early teen and I am not near as bad as my mother was at this age so there is hope that I didn't get the full bluntness of it.

Hopefully there will be more research out there soon. People laugh at me when I ask for a ride at night... no one even knows that night blindness is real!!

Good luck!
Blake.

I've had some problems seeing well at night, my sister told me to take bilberry. I started taking it and increased my vitamin A, drinking carrot juice every day. It seems to be helping, but takes a little while to work T ry it.

Hi guys,
if u have night blindness since birth, please check whether it is retinitis pigmentosa, coz most probably it is. My mom and brothers had it too. If it is yes, then nothing we can do (at this stage) coz researchers still working on it.
#37 - SUZY - 06/25/2008 - 03:27
Hey everyone, im 23 and i also have nightblindness just like most other people here...i dont think i was born with it because i really started to see a change on how i saw things at night in my later years of middle school. One possible cause of it was laser pointers being played with too much or just not eating a healthy enough diet. Ive played soccer and swimming year around since i was 3 years old so as a kid, i hated eating health food, my metabolism was high and never gained weight so i just ate junk food which could be another possible cause on my condition, not getting enough Vitamin A. I rarely go to bars, dances, clubs, movie theaters, restaurants because of the dark areas. At night, i still drive but i have installed some fogs lights and H.I.D.s(High Intensity Discharge) headlights. These headlights are what some of the BMWs, Mercedes, Inifinity, Acura, Hybrid cars all come equipped with, they are very bright(brighter than your conventional halogen bulbs). They are also expensive but really worth it. I would recommend getting these lights installed on your cars and if you do, they have different temperature ratings to choose from and the brightest and most popular temp. is 6,000K(these are super bright white lights) the 8000K gives a more bluish light but does not permit as much light as the 6000k. I try to do anything and everything to not let night blindness stop me from living my life...it might slow me down but i wont give in to it. Dont give up if you feel hopeless about your night blindness, instead of avoiding the issue by staying at home all the time, learn your surroundings at home and learn how things work in public as well. Dont do anything that might cause major harm to yourself and especially others i.e. driving a car with a bunch of friends if you cant see very well driving at night(thats a no no from my experience). Carry a small flashlight with you that can fit in your pocket or purse or whatever works. There are flashlights out there that are very compact in size but can give out alot of light. When you go out with a group of friends or just one or 2 people...let them know your situation and condition. instead of walking directly next to the person, trail them alittle bit from the side and behind...so your eye sight will have the person you are with and the view in front. this will help with your confidence so you dont feel like youre completely alone and constantly keeping check where you are, what youre walking on, and any other obstacles. Sometimes it doesnt hurt to have a D.G.(designated guider). basically since im a guy and i go out...if there are friends of mine that are with me who are girls, i usually tell them my situation and ask them if they could be my guide for the night and this means in areas where i cant see or need help they can hold my hand and walk me through and sort of give me a heads up of things that could be avoided. This has always worked and have no shame telling anyone about my condition. If im with just all guys(surely i wont want to hold their hands but they still help me out by letting me know of anything around or coming up to avoid any problems. Of course you will have your days will you will run into things you didnt see that most other people will see, like the wet floor signs, or any tables or objects that are low to the ground and not in your eye sight. Nightblindess, in my case and very rare in any other cases i know of, is even more difficult for me because im also hearing impaired. As a deaf person, your eyes are your ears, you read lips, you read body language, you automatically have a sense of watching your surroundings but nightblindness and deafness is a very very difficult thing because you cant see who you are really talking to or what they might be saying especially in crowded areas or loud areas. I hope this helps inspire anyone who are looking for simple answers and help until there is a cure and hopefully this helps someone out there. good luck to you guys

I think I have this because one day at Christmas I was at my aunt's house and looked in a real bright light and it really had a deep effect on the way I see things around my room at night. Like before I had it I could see out the window of my room even when the light from the moon came in and I have blurred vision and a sore left eye. I am VERY scared that when I looked in that light, it damaged my retina for good! I am so very depressed and would like to know if that was enough to cause permanent damage. Can someone tell me if that brought on retinitis?

Very scared!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm having problems seeing at night. When I am in a vehicle at night, I can't only see what is in front of the headlights. I can see the driver at the corner of my eye, the dash lights enable me to do this, but if I look directly at the driver, I cannot see him/her. I always have to sleep with the light on so I can see should I wake at night. Even when the curtain is left open, you would think I could see the light reflection on the wall. Again, if I look directly at it, I cannot see it, but I can at the corner of my eye. I have almost like black dots in the middle of my eyes at night.

I also have nightblindness/retinitis pigmentosa. i can recommend painting high visibility colours on things you need to see or might bump into around the house. Ive known ive had the condition for about 7 years now. Im still playing football during the day and on a floodlit pitch at night i use a bright orange football. I would definatly recommend taking a torch everywhere too. a lot of things that i do regularly i can do with my eyes closed now anyway. I always kick steps as i go up and down and always count them so ill know and look more normal next time i use them. And last little tip, if you drop something on the floor and cant find it, turn the light off, lie on the floor with your eyeline parallel to the floor then use your torch and scan 360 degrees, it is so easy to spot then! Good luck and try not to get too downhearted!

My wife has retinal degeneration and cannot see well at night. A type of toxic accumulation of vitamin A in the retina, called lipofuscin is at the root of the problem, so I am wondering if increasing the beta carotine in the diet would worsen the problem. I would be so grateful if anyone could help answer this question. Thank you.

I can suddenly not see at night. I ended up driving on the curb of a well lit and marked familiar road, I felt lost. I was diagnosed with Pancriatic cancer in oct. 04, and had a whipple procedure. I have had 14 surgeries since then. I have dealt with abdominal hernias to Fistulas. In Aug. 09, I had an ileostomy reversal which I had a bag for 4 months. 1\2 of my colon was removed during the reversal. I am also undetectable HIV +. I am worried that some of the meds I am on are the cause of my problem. It has come so quickly and getting worse by the day. I hada little accident in Feb 09, where a 12 pack of cokes hit me in the eye and infected my cornea which left a large Scar. In 1976 I had a Cornea transplant on my right eye which was damaged due to another accident, but with the technology of the times I was left unable to see well enough after surgery, and am considered legally blind in that eye. Accident in 09 was my left eye. I see well in daylight, but scarry at night. If nayone can help it would be greatly appreciated, I can give you the names of all MEDS I am on. Since my Cancer surgery and all of the internal parts removed I do suffer from constant dihrrea. If anyone can help or suggest any help please contact me at fherrera3@austin.rr.com.....thanks from the bottom of my heart.

I've had nightblindness since I was born I didn't even know what it was till I was about twelve years old.I'm now eighteen, and I want to study Ecology but I feel I cant because it requires work in the field and if I had to work in the field with my condition it'll hold me back.this is what I really want to do in my second year of university next year but I feel it's not possible.PLEASE OFFER ADVICE before I end studying something I don't want to spend my life studying.

I've had nightblindness since birth, and it seemed to have been caused by some birth defect, nothing related to retinitis pigmentosa or deficencies. It sucks.

Driving at night the Lights on some cars bother Me. I do not think I have
night Blindness . A stratford Cop puled me over on main Street.. was looking for my street to tun into . Accused me of of being Drunk and on
Drugs was going to take My Licence away. and impound my car. Went
to my Doctors . The eye doctor checked me out and I can see the Regulated DMV Qualaication for Driving a car. My other Doctor said
if I get botherd by Cops about being a Druggie to Contact him and
he will take care of the Matter.

Anyone suffering from this should begin taking cod liver oil - it has a more easily absorbed version of Vitamin A. Nordic Naturals is a great brand and tests for contaminants in every batch. Also, if you have this you should be on your toes with any current/future offspring.

How am I supposed to make a living when I can't see or drive at night? I hope there is something out there to help me.
