Evening Primrose Oil

Evening primrose, a small yellow wildflower (Oenothera biennis), has been used medicinally for centuries. The oil, pressed from the seed, is rich in linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid (EFA). "Essential" means that we have to consume the nutrient because the body does not produce it. Fortunately, EFAs are plentiful in foods, notably nuts and seeds. These polyunsaturated fats are good fats, unlike the saturated fats that contribute to heart disease.

The Europeans were one of the first to make it popular. They brought it back to their native soil and crowned this oil a "King's cure-all" because of its many useful properties that can cure a large number of diseases. In England, the oil is approved for use with eczema and high cholesterol. In women, it can especially be helpful for relieving breast pain, menstrual pains and improving the quality and fertility of cervical mucus.

GLA, the primary active ingredient in EPO, has anticancer activity in test tube studies and in some, but not all, animal studies. Injecting GLA into tumors has caused regression of cancer in people in preliminary research. Preliminary evidence in people with cancer suggested "marked subjective improvement," though not all studies find GLA helpful. Evening primrose oil (EPO) contains the essential unsaturated fatty acids linoleic and gamma-linoleic acid. The latter is thought to be helpful in restoring the body's natural balance of fatty acids.

The evening primrose contains an essential fatty acid called gamma linolenic acid (GLA). The body does not produce essential fatty acids so the must be ingested through food. GLA and omega-3 fatty acids together produce a second type of prostaglandin, called E1. This type of prostaglandin helps reduce inflammation and aids in digestion.

Evening Primrose Oil or EPO lowers cholesterol, helps to alleviate premenstrual syndrome symptoms and aids in the production of fertile quality cervical fluid. Evening Primrose Oil or EPO does a world of good in treating aliments of all sorts. Evening Primrose Oil or EPO is an essential fatty acid that contains gamma linolenic acid (GLA). This gamma linolenic acid (GLA) is converted to a hormone-like substance called prostaglandin E1 which has anti-inflammatory properties and may also act as a blood thinner and blood vessel dilator. These anti-inflammatory properties of evening primrose oil help people suffering from pains, aches and cramps.

Evening primrose oil is also believed to help alleviate cramps associated with pre-menstrual symptoms, though this has yet to be scientifically proven. Eating fatty fish such as tuna, mackerel, salmon and herring, and using safflower, sunflower and rapeseed oils in cooking is the first step to increasing your intake of these acids.

BENEFITS OF EVENING PRIMROSE OIL

EPO has been shown to be beneficial for a wide range of conditions. Evening primrose oil (EPO) contains an omega-6 essential fatty acid, gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which is felt to be the active ingredient. EPO has been studied in a wide variety of disorders, particularly those affected by metabolic products of essential fatty acids. However, high-quality evidence for its use in most conditions is still lacking.

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) – has been shown to eradicate swollen abdomen and breast discomfort as well as reducing irritability and depression.

Eczema and other skin disorders – available on prescription for eczema Psoriasis may be helped by EPO and Fish Oils.

Cholesterol and Blood Pressure – has been shown to reduce high serum cholesterol and blood pressure, but may take several weeks or longer to achieve. EPO is also reputed to assist in circulation, high blood pressure, the reduction of cholesterol and the maintenance of healthy arteries all major factors in the prevention of heart disease. Again it is the GLA content of the oil that is thought to be responsible. Modern western lifestyle habits such as smoking, dietary errors and lack of exercise may lead to a reduction of prostaglandins which are needed to maintain a normal healthy cardiovascular system. The addition of GLA rich Primrose Oil may reduce the tendency of the blood to clot abnormally and may also effectively reduce cholesterol.

Rheumatoid Arthritis – One common use for evening primrose and borage oil is for relieving the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis—the kind that produces inflamed joints (as opposed to osteoarthritis, which is caused by wear and tear on the joints). There is some preliminary evidence that it may help, and the Arthritis Foundation considers it worth trying for rheumatoid arthritis. But you should talk to your doctor first. Fish oil supplements are another option. sufferers have discontinued use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs after supplementation, but it is more effective when taken in conjunction with fish oils.

Alcoholism – may make withdrawal easier, and reduce post-drinking depression.

Immune System – low levels of essential fatty acids may stop the action of interferon, and body’s natural virus killer.

Today, evening primrose seed oil (EPO) is used primarily to relieve the itchiness associated with certain skin conditions (such as eczema) and to ease breast tenderness from premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or other causes.

Other conditions for which EPO is currently under scientific investigation and may prove beneficial include breast cancer, heart disease, high cholesterol, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, stomach ulcers, and inflammatory bowel disease (such as ulcerative colitis). While some test tube and animal studies seem promising, it is much too early to tell if EPO is helpful or harmful for these conditions.

SYMPTOMS OF HIGH INTAKE

Evening primrose oil appears to be safe. Stomach upset, headaches, and rashes have been reported as side effects. None of these are fatal, of course.

So, are they saying that low levels of this fatty acid are not good for the immune system, if they prevent the body's natural virus infection fighter?

#15 - Debbie - 09/29/2009 - 12:05
Wow. I have read all the responses before writing. My Doc just prescribed Primrose Oil. I have eczema on my neck, sore breast, loosing my hair, rhumitoid arthritis in my hands and hips, and vaginal dryness. I thought I was just falling apart or growing old, one or the other! LOL. Now that I know other are experiencing similar symptoms, I can't wait to get started. The Doc says if there isn't a change in about 6 weeks, I should get a hold of him again. Now I'm excited!!! My end hope results is that I'm not so darn tired or bogged down all the time.
#16 - JMC - 10/14/2009 - 11:17
Can anyone give an idea of how much you are supposed to take daily? I have taken EPO 1000mg daily for 6 weeks with little effect on my PMS. Have just doubled dose. Just wondered how much others are taking that are seeing positive changes.
#17 - Nat - 10/14/2009 - 22:27
Nat, the directions should be on the bottle. Before taking EPO, I was using 1000mg Excedrine Migraine for PMS and felt it helped at the height of the times as it also helps not only with migraines.
#18 - JMC - 10/18/2009 - 13:30
I've just started taking EPO for severe breast swelling & tenderness also known as Fibroidcystic Mammery Condition. One lump has reduced by over 75% in 48 hours. EPO is NOT a fix all type of Essential Oil. Do NOT double the dose, try taking it at regular intervals. It's more effective that way.
#19 - TJC - 10/20/2009 - 22:35
Nat, In this page they say about 3 grms daily: http://vitamins.ultimatefatburner.com/evening-primrose-oil.html
#20 - GR - 11/02/2009 - 08:03
advise to anyone taking EPO: take a vitamin E supplement or something with lots of antioxidants. I did a lot of research and found that it helps the EPO work better. I am also taking it myself and I would take me a long time to explain all my benifits.
#21 - Denise - 12/04/2009 - 12:10
will this help with very dry skin? i've tried all kinds of lotions and nothing works.
#22 - tina - 12/13/2009 - 16:16
I have been taking evening primrose oil to help with painful breasts in combination with severe pms related symptoms like water gain, and cyclical depression. It really works for me. I am so grateful that my doctor suggested adding it to my diet. In addition to the evening primrose oil, I'm taking vitamin E, B complex, Vit. D and extra C, using a prescribed diuretic. I have cut out alcohol and am watching my diet.
#23 - Nancy Dhu - 01/05/2010 - 07:50
Does taking evening primerose daily stop your mensurations (I have been taking for the passed 3 years) cycle???
#24 - serene - 01/12/2010 - 03:20

Long live EPO!
#31 - Sabal - 06/07/2010 - 12:46
Be careful with taking epo if you are trying to conceive. I have read that it can be helpful with conception but I don't think you're supposed to take it during pregnancy. I am taking it right now, at the suggestion of my midwife, to ripen my cervix for delivery but she says you're not supposed to take it until you are at least 37 weeks bc it encourages labor to some degree. Just wouldn't want anyone to work to conceive only to lose the baby due to premature labor. Good luck!
#32 - Alison - 06/11/2010 - 20:13
Also, AZ- don't know about EPO for cold sores but I do know that L-Lysine helps greatly. I have been taking one a day (on an empty stomach) since high school and I never have cold sores anymore. It's also good for overall skin health. You can buy it at Wal-Mart or any drug store.
#33 - Alison - 06/11/2010 - 20:18
On his show, Dr. Oz recommended Oil of Primrose for what is called, "male pattern balding" (I'm a 75 yr. old female). I had several bald spots and severe thinning at the top of my head. For a female, there is nothing more shattering. After three months taking 3 gel caps oil of primrose (1350 mg. each) per day, I again have a full head of hair. It's still baby fine...but it's FULL baby fine. I bless Dr. Oz every day.
#34 - Carol Warner - 06/25/2010 - 18:08
I am aching to give birth to my baby boy, second for me, and my OBGYN recamended I try Evening Primrose oil tablets to help induce labor. My cervix is already softening and I am about 38 weeks, also will be drinking Red Raspberry leaf Tea to help induce labor. She's already "stretched the membrane" and we are hoping within the next few days to give birth. I have heard positive feedback about the help EPO provides during this time and i am hoping it works!!
#35 - Vanessa - 07/08/2010 - 20:29
I have been taking EPO for about a year now. I started taking it because i was having irregular periods. and now they are regular. it was immediate. but it takes about a month to work for clearing up your skin and also my hair is shiny!! I also have eczema.. and ever since i started taking EPO i stopped using my hydrocortisone cream.. I take 3 gel caps a day!

this is my magic pill. :)
#36 - Niva - 07/16/2010 - 07:53
I've been taking EPO for 3 months - once daily. I've seen a dramatic difference in PMS symtoms. My periods have been shorter for the last two cycles and the pain is much less. I started taking because of an ovarian cyst. The cyst has since gotten much smaller and the potential for major operation has diminished. I'm very happy so far with the results.
#37 - Annalee - 08/08/2010 - 19:35
i have sufferred from horrible PMS all my life- now in my 40's it started to get s o bad that i didn't even want to be around me. Primrose was suggested to me by a dear friend and for the last 7 months I take 1300mg in the am and pm - around my period i take 2 more in the afternoon- it has made me calmer, i still get pms but it is very mild and i am so happy that i don't have to take midol and tylenol or any other otc meds- if your having bad pms spells try primrose i swear it works. i have a 12 year old daughter who i'm wondering if i should add this too her diet?? good luck
#38 - veronica - 08/11/2010 - 00:36
EPO has eliminated the breast pain I get every month right before my period. I've been taking it for several months and some of my cysts have gone away, still waiting on others. My periods are also much more regular.
#39 - Amy - 08/12/2010 - 01:07

I been using EPO for 15 years and now it is helping me with menopause as well. I have had no side effects and I take medications for heart & brain disease. I ran out for the past month and picked it back up and WOW! It indeed works. My elevated blood pressure due to brain disease. It doesnt hurt to try in small amounts if you are curious. I started with one 500 mg dose for a month and then built up to now taking 1500 mgs. I am not a Dr always check with your Dr.
#44 - Lisa K - 09/27/2010 - 07:11
I've been using for 10 months with good results. My nutritionist always recommends brands of supplements that he's checked for efficacy. The EPO he has me on is Natural Factors (the oil itself is produced in the Netherlands). I use the 1000 mg. size. I take 3 capsules before breakfast and 2 before dinner.

By the way, a year ago I met a 5 years old girl who had a bad case of psorisis and she got totally better by drinking the Kangen water through my health practicianer friend. You can learn more on YouTube under Kangen miracle water youtube. Good luck

been taking evening primrose supplements for over 20 years. It has been a life saver. I became asthmatic after the birth of my 3rd child. I am allergic to cats, dust and antihistamines. I began taking actual oil 1/2 tsp per day but it is no longer available so now i take capsules at least 3 per day sometimes i double the doseage. And yes it works better with vitamin E. I have done alot of experimenting in 20 years and it is definitely something I will continue to take. Even though I am asthmatic I have been able to go from being dependant on steriod puffers to only using them if I have a severe cold. I still have allergies they are just under control.

I am reading alot of you have eczema...do you know that it is usually caused by the body reacting to foods or something ingested. I found this out from extensive research due to having a 3yr old with severe eczema. I forced the issue with my MD to have him tested for food allergies and the result was amzing...my son had two allergies that were triggering the eczema and then another one that we were not aware of that was life threatening. I suggest you all get some testing done...

2- I encountered with two patients that this medication has caused peritibial leg oedema ! How do we explain that as well
Waiting for the expert reply please.

I notice lots of fibrocystic complaints. The best thing for this is iodine. Go to Amazon and order the ioderol, which has iodine/posassium iodide in the proper ratio. Check with a good naturopath. 50 mg/day for four to six months will dissolve the breast and ovarian cysts. It will also strengthen the thyroid and detox the bad chlorine/flouride, which most use to make thyroid hormone because of iodine deficiency (if you dont suppliment, you're deficient, as with d3, magnesium, and b12) 12.5 mg a day protects from radioactive iodide. Be careful if on thyroid hormone, as supplimenting will usually remove the need for it.

#75 - joanne - 08/29/2011 - 13:16
I am a 32 yr old woman who has thinning hair for the past 10 years (it continues to get worse). My hypothroidism is to blaim of course, and I just started taking EPO a few weeks ago, Sounds like I'm not taking enough though (3000 mg a day as bottle says). Does anyone know the maximum amount I can safely take a day?
#76 - miranda - 09/14/2011 - 03:07
I have been taking EPO for the past 2 or 3 weeks. I am taking it for my Costocondritis. Since it's supposed to help with inflammation, I'm hoping it'll eventually make the pain go away altogether. I take 2 500 mg pills a day, one after lunch and one after dinner. I take The Vitamin Shoppe brand. I want to say I'm noticing not as much pain lately. :)

Hopefully it will also help with my unbearable cramps as well since that is in the same category of "inflammation." And my hair falls out like you wouldn't believe but it's still as thick as a horse's tail! But my hair is everywhere! I have to clean my brush and floors 3-5 times a week! Hopefully EPO will help with the hair loss too b/c I am sick of this, it's so annoying and gross!
#77 - Laura - 09/20/2011 - 16:55
I have taken epo for two weeks now the result is smoother skin, many ladies have began to take as well and I can see the change in their skin on their face, good oil.
#78 - Richard Hardy - 11/02/2011 - 21:53
I am trying the epo for hot flashes, mood swings and etc. This was recommended by a friend. Hope it will do the job cause I need some relief. Hope I can spell evening primrose oil 1300 mg for relief.
#79 - Mildred - 11/08/2011 - 09:04
to lislaena comment #54, please do not put your 5 year old child on this or any medication/ herb/ vitamin for being a little hyper. A little hyper and even a lot hyper is very normal and typical for a 5 year old child and the possible side effects of supplements and/or meds on such a young child are not worth it, especially for something that is completely normal such as hyperactivity in very young children.
#80 - Amanda - 12/29/2011 - 14:18
Dr. Oz also said this (GLA) is good for fat busting. I also have read all the different things it helps like hot flashes, pain and inflammation, menstrual irregularity. I am starting it tonight so I am hoping that it does all this plus more. We shall see!!!
